The Rankin Brothers

By Robert J. Nebel

Editor, Men's Traveler

If you're ever in Branson, Missouri, check out the Rankin Brothers act at the Welk Resort Hotel. The talented duo are playing here throughout 2008. These guys perform just about everything from the 1950s through 1990s (well, I'm not sure if they cover Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" or Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water"). But, you'll hear some great music including this version of "Wake Up Little Susie." I think even Simon Cowell of "American Idol" fame would be proud of this performance:

And "Sounds of Silence":

I saw the Brothers when I was in Little Rock, Arkansas back in June 2008. They played at our breakfast and I must say that they, "passed the audition."

Music in Memphis

It is no secret that Beale Street in Memphis is a hot spot for great music. Today, this legendary thoroughfare in the heart of the city is exploding with a mélange of musicians creating a new sound. Hurricane Katrina left thousands without a home including scores of artists from Louisiana and Mississippi who arrived here with little more than the shirts on their backs looking for work. “We reacted quickly by stepping up to the plate to coordinate musicians so that we can book them,” said Carson Lamn, a club operator on Beale Street. “They just want to keep at their craft. I am simply here to help.” (more)
Mississippi Juke Joints
Blues music was born in the North Mississippi Delta after the Civil War. An expression of the hardships felt by the victims of slavery and discrimination, this style of music told the story of the times.
